Yangon Street Photography by Lorenz Berna - Night Colors of the City | Yangon Fotografia di Strada di Lorenz Berna - Colori della Notte nella città

Night Colours of the City.
For this picture, a nearby traffic light gave an interesting pink colour on the walls. So I waited for people in the frame to make a nice composition.
In street photography, you are free to play with angles and perspectives, lights and colours or shapes and postures. It is a playful ground that I particularly affectionate, even if I find it the more demanding of the Travel Photography Genres (Landscapes and Portraits being the others). Indeed you have to be constantly alert, aware of any possible appealing shot, quick and instinctive as well as empathic and respectful as you often deal with people.

Yangon Street Photography by Lorenz Berna - Buddhist Nuns on alms giving

The Buddhist Nuns in Myanmar are called Thilashins wich means “possessor of morality”.
They observe the Ten Precepts and are easy recognised by their pink robes, orange shawl, shaven head and metal alms bowl. Thilashins go out on alms rounds during the day of observance to receive uncooked rice or money.

Yangon Street Photography by Lorenz Berna - Birds seeds seller | Yangon Fotografia di Strada di Lorenz Berna - Venditrice di semi per uccelli

A birds seeds seller is waiting for customers in a street of Yangon.
Feeding birds is one of the practices used by Buddhist worshippers in Myanmar to gain merits and purify their own karma.

Yangon Street Photography by Lorenz Berna - Burmese Boy | Yangon Fotografia di Strada di Lorenz Berna - Giovane ragazzo burmese

Burmese Boy in a half Light.
This photo was taken with a 28mm that made the shot possible in a very narrow walkway in the market of the Chinese quarter. I love the touch of the 28mm that gives a 3 dimensional look and makes the viewer feel being part of the scene.

Modern Boys in Yangon, Myanmar street fotography by Lorenz Berna | Ragazzi moderni in Yangon, Fotografia di Strada di Myanmar di Lorenz Berna

Two friends are adopting the modern look : alternative haircuts and jeans shirt combined with the traditional Longyi worn instead of pants.

Street food stand in a Yangon Street, photo of Lorenz Berna for Travelphotospirit Blog | Venditori di street food in una strada di Yangon, foto di Lorenz Berna per il Blog Travelphotospirit

Street Food stands are everywhere in the country.
Food Stands are an optimum way to feel the atmosphere of a quarter, get useful informations about the city, the country or the culture and make some local friends. They are also fantastic places to make great portraits and street photography. In Yangon especially, because the old colonial buildings give a colourful and characteristic background to your shots.

Woman passing in a street of Yangon, photo by Lorenz Berna of Myanmar | Donna passando in una strada di Yangon, foto di Lorenz Berna del Myanmar

Yangon Street Photography, across the road.
Here are some elements that made this scene interesting to capture.
Her blue dress combined with the complementary yellow of the road signalisation, the long shadows on the road echo to her long dark hair, the beautiful light on her skin contrasts with the darkness of the shadows. Not to forget, the lines in the frame that turned this scene into a nice composition.

Seller Boy in the Streets of Yangon, photo by Lorenz Berna of Myanmar | Venditore nelle strade di Yangon, foto di Lorenz Berna del Myanmar

Seller Boy with Thanaka paste.
His posture and the light on his face were enough to make of this ordinary moment a nice street photography of Yangon.

Colours of Break in Yangon City, a Myanmar street photography by Lorenz Berna | Colori del riposo Nella Citta di Yangon, una fotografia di strada del Myanmar di Lorenz Berna

Breaktime Colours in Yangon City.
The obvious play of colours between the women clothes and the yellow plots of the road, used as benches by these two ladies, attract me to do this picture. I also very much liked the natural and comfort of their pose, in a quite un-cosy environment.

Yangon Street photography by Lorenz Berna - Family resting in Chaos | Yangon Fotografia di Strada di Lorenz Berna - Famiglia riposando nel caos

Resting in Chaos.
Thanks to a nearby bridge I was able to isolate this family relaxing in the middle of a chaotic angle of street. I immediately loved the contrast between the roughness of the place and the slackness of these three members of the family who seemed to feel very much at ease in such a context. An afternoon home in the hectic streets of the capital city.
Simplicity, contentment and easy-going are qualities you come across with everyday in Myanmar.

Sule Pagoda in Yangon, Photo by Lorenz Berna of Myanmar | Sule Pagoda in Yangon, foto di Lorenz Berna del Myanmar

Young couple enjoying the city view from a bridge near the famous Sule Pagoda of Yangon.
This bridge is an excellent spot to get original street pictures, of the temple but also of the people passing by and down the bridge. A different perspective from above.

Breakfast in Myanmar, photo by Lorenz Berna | Collazione in Myanmar, foto di Lorenz Berna

Breakfast in Myanmar.
As many Asian countries, in Myanmar people eat on the go, buying their food from passing sellers or sitting for a few minutes in a local stand. Breakfasts can be fritters like the ones on the picture, rice noodles and fish (Mohinga) or glutinous rice with coconut sweetened chickpeas for a vegetarian version in this Buddhist country.
